An Accessible Website: Continuously Checked Instead of Fixed Once

An accessible website excludes no one – and since June 2025 the German Accessibility Strengthening Act (BFSG) requires it legally for many online shops. The module checks your pages continuously for the most common barriers, instead of filing a PDF audit once a year.

What it is

Eight checkpoints, on every run

The Accessibility module is part of MCP SEO and costs €99 to €399 per month depending on scope, plus credits. Instead of a one-off audit, the check runs continuously and keeps telling you what has changed since the last run – without you having to operate a testing tool yourself. On every run, eight points where websites most often fail get checked: colour contrasts, alt texts for images (covered in more depth in the Image SEO module), keyboard operability, form labels, the heading hierarchy, focus visibility, the language declaration in the HTML and touch target sizes on mobile devices.

Contrast ratio: schematic comparison WCAG 2.1 AA requires at least 4.5:1 contrast for body text. Poor contrast Read text barely legible × 2,1:1 below 4.5:1 – WCAG AA failed Good contrast Read text easily legible 7,2:1 above 4.5:1 – WCAG AA met
Schematic example: contrast ratios per WCAG 2.1 AA – not a real measurement of any specific website.

Much of this pays off twice: alt texts, a clean heading structure and semantic HTML are also classic on-page work – the same points the On-Page module evaluates from an SEO perspective. Accessibility and search engine optimisation are simply the same craft here.

Why it’s a problem

Barriers cost customers first, and since 2025 legally too

Anyone who can’t reach the buy button buys elsewhere – that costs you revenue first. Since 28 June 2025, the legal aspect comes on top.

Barriers cost customers

Anyone who can’t operate the ordering process abandons it. That happens long before anyone calls in a market surveillance authority.

BFSG in force since June 2025

For electronic-commerce services under Section 1(3) no. 5 BFSG – online shops fall under it, even if their products are not covered by the law.

Not everyone is affected

Purely corporate websites without an ordering function and B2B websites without consumer contracts don’t fall under it. Micro-enterprises are exempt for services (Section 3(3) BFSG).

Technical reference

The BFSGV specifies the requirements in Sections 12, 13 and 19; the technical reference is EN 301 549, which for websites points to WCAG 2.1 at levels A and AA.

“I run around 15 client projects in parallel, e-commerce and B2B. The perennial issues are the same everywhere: missing alt texts, invisible keyboard focus, forms without labels. This is exactly where a continuous run beats an annual audit.”

How to solve it

The process in six steps – always ending with your approval

The process in six steps 1 2 3 4 5 6 Capture currentstate Check eightpoints Prioritisefindings Add judgementcalls Merge withmodules Approval
Every run ends at step 6 – nothing is implemented without your yes.
1

Capture the current state

Every run compares the current state with the last – changes get noticed immediately, not at the next annual audit.

2

Check eight points

Contrasts, alt texts, keyboard operability, form labels, heading hierarchy, focus visibility, language declaration, touch target sizes.

3

Prioritise findings

New barriers land on your action list with location, cause and suggested fix – sorted by impact.

4

Add judgement calls

Whether an alt text describes the image meaningfully or a screen-reader user understands the checkout is something no tool checks. Such questions are added manually, as an additional service.

5

Merge with other modules

A missing alt text doesn’t show up in three reports, but once – with a suggested fix for your CMS, whether WordPress, Shopify, Shopware or TYPO3.

6

Approval

Every measure goes to you for approval before it goes live. Nothing is implemented behind your back.

To be honest: if your shop falls under the BFSG and has never been checked, a manual initial review with screen-reader tests is the right first step – the module then maintains the level. A large team with daily deployments or an upcoming relaunch argues more for an agency with dedicated support.
What’s in it for you

What the module delivers permanently

How much accessibility influences your ranking depends on your website – there’s no ranking guarantee, from anyone. What the module delivers is reliability:

01

Reported earlier

Barriers are detected before customers or the market surveillance authority find them

02

Prioritised list

An action list with location and suggested fix instead of an 80-page PDF

03

SEO included

Alt texts and structure also pay off in rankings

04

Documented

Every check run is documented – if the market surveillance authority asks, you have something in hand

Plus the usual conditions: reply within 24 hours on weekdays, quarterly report, cancellable monthly. Your content and access belong to you. How the prices are composed is explained in detail on the SEO costs.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about accessibility

Does the BFSG also apply to my corporate website without a shop?

Usually no. The law covers certain products and services – for websites, mainly those through which consumers conclude contracts. A pure information website without an ordering or booking function doesn’t fall under it. A lawyer clarifies this bindingly, not your website tool.

Does the automated test find all barriers?

No – and anyone promising you that is selling false security. Machine-checkable are contrasts, missing labels, alt texts, focus states and structure. Whether a page is truly operable with a screen reader only a screen-reader test shows.

Does accessibility bring better rankings?

Partly. Alt texts and a clean structure are SEO fundamentals that search engines evaluate. I don’t derive a ranking promise from that.

Can I cancel the module again?

Yes, monthly. Your content and access belong to you – afterwards too.

Context

Back to the pillar

Accessibility is a module of MCP SEO, my system for automated SEO routine work. Direct neighbours: the On-Page module for structure and meta data, the Image SEO module for alt texts and image weights, and the PageSpeed module – because a page that doesn’t load is the biggest barrier of all.

Prefer everything done manually from a single source? The on-page optimisation as a manual service covers structure and accessibility too. What each route costs is on the SEO costs.
