Optimising for AI Overviews: The AI Visibility Module

Google answers more and more queries directly – with AI Overviews and AI Mode. The module continuously checks the documented prerequisites for that and implements them, instead of promising a citation nobody can guarantee.

What it is

AI visibility: what the module continuously checks

AI visibility is a building block of my automated SEO system. The module continuously monitors whether your website meets the conditions Google documents for its generative search features – and corrects what’s missing after your approval.

Concretely, it checks and maintains five things: the technical prerequisites per page, the handling of AI crawlers in robots.txt, the consistency of your company data across website, schema, legal notice and business profile, the llms.txt and grounding-page files, and the metrics from Search Console. This page describes the service behind it – what gets checked and implemented continuously, not the theory of generative search.

Why it’s a problem

Hardly any field produces so many claims without evidence

These four patterns I encounter most often in client projects – each one costs trust and time.

llms.txt is overrated

It’s sold as a Google lever, even though Google writes in its own guide to generative search features that search ignores the file.

Blocking Google-Extended doesn’t help

Anyone believing this removes the page from AI Overviews is mistaken – they run via the perfectly normal Googlebot.

Citation guarantees are empty promises

No provider can guarantee that ChatGPT or Google cites your website. Anyone promising that is deceiving you.

The pace outruns one-off checks

Google’s guide to generative search features was last updated in July 2026. A one-off check is outdated after a few months.

“Across around 15 parallel client projects, the question I now hear most often is: why doesn’t ChatGPT cite us? My answer is uncomfortable. Nobody can guarantee it – only the prerequisites can be checked, and for most people a fair amount there lies fallow.”

Myth vs. fact: AI visibility Three common assumptions, compared with Google’s own documentation. Widespread myth What actually holds “The llms.txt decides whethermy page appears in AIOverviews.” Google states in its ownguide that search does notevaluate the file. “Blocking Google-Extendedprotects my page fromAI Overviews.” AI Overviews run via thenormal Googlebot – the blockstays ineffective. “A provider can guarantee mea citation in ChatGPT orGoogle.” Only the documented prerequisitescan be checked – a citationnobody can guarantee. viktorpasztor.de · MCP SEO · AI Visibility module

How to solve it

The process in six steps – always ending with your approval

The process in six steps 1 2 3 4 5 6 Check technicalbasis ConfigureAI crawlers Reconcileentities llms.txt &grounding page Measure viaGSC report Approval
Every run ends at step 6 – no change goes live without your yes.
1

Check technical prerequisites

According to Google’s documentation on AI features, a page must be indexed, allowed to serve a snippet, and the website must be included in Search Console for generative search features. The module checks all three points per page; crawlability and indexability are secured by the Technical SEO module.

2

Control AI crawlers by your decision

Whether GPTBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot may access your content is a business decision – yours. The module reveals the current state, explains both directions and implements what you decide.

3

Keep entities consistent

Company name, address, figures and self-description must match across website, legal notice and business profile. The schema side of that is handled by the Structured Data module; deviations are listed and corrected.

4

Maintain llms.txt and grounding page

Frankly: Google doesn’t evaluate llms.txt, and for other systems the evidence is missing in both directions. I deliver both anyway – little effort, no risk, and the grounding page also helps human readers.

5

Measuring

Via the generative-search-features report in Search Console – the most reliable data source available on this topic.

6

Approval

Every change reaches you as a proposal first. Nothing goes live without your approval – that’s the core principle of MCP SEO, not just of this module.

To be honest: if you need an AI strategy with workshops and coordination across several departments, you’re better served by an agency or manual support. Anyone with a small website who enjoys reading up will also get there with Google’s guide.
What’s in it for you

The documented prerequisites for generative search features are met – and stay met.

02

Documented decision

Your decision on AI crawlers is documented instead of left to chance.

03

Consistent data

Your company data no longer contradicts itself anywhere.

04

Documented metrics

You get metrics instead of gut feeling, reported quarterly.

05

Reliable collaboration

Frequently asked questions

Questions about AI visibility

Can you guarantee that ChatGPT or Google cites us?

No – and anyone promising it is deceiving you. No provider can guarantee visibility, and no external tool has access to the internal ranking or AI systems. Only the documented prerequisites can be checked and met.

Does an llms.txt do anything at all?

Not for Google Search – Google ignores the file by its own account. For ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity there’s no evidence, neither for nor against. The module maintains it anyway, because the effort is small and there’s no risk. I won’t sell it to you as a lever.

Should I block GPTBot and other AI crawlers?

You decide. OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity each document separate bots for model training, search and user retrieval – so you can block training and stay visible in AI search. Allowing means a chance of being named in AI answers; blocking means no use of your content, but also no visibility there. And: not every crawler respects robots.txt.

How is success measured?

Via the Search Console report on generative search features, which Google is currently rolling out gradually. For ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity there’s no official measurement report. Spot checks are possible but serve as a rough indication, not as a metric.

Context

Back to the pillar

AI visibility is a module of MCP SEO, my system for automated SEO routine work. It draws on the neighbouring modules: the Technical SEO module keeps your pages crawlable and indexable, the Structured Data module provides the schema basis for entity consistency.

What the overall system costs and how the prices compare is on the SEO costs.
